There is a rumour, much-beloved of the right wing trolls who frequent this blog a lot more often at present than the comments section might suggest, that I do not really work. Then, when I admit to needing a day off they troll again.
So, let me recount a day last week. It was Wednesday.
Six blogs were published, with comments dealt with.
Five videos were recorded (some more than once, because Thomas is more than willing to tell me when he thinks I can do better) and work with him on the edits of a couple was begun.
Podcasts with AccountingWEB and Scotonomics were recorded, each being about an hour in length.
The slides for a postgraduate seminar presentation were written.
Preparatory notes for an undergraduate lecture the next day were reviewed.
And an hour was spent in a meeting with colleagues from Sheffield, the International Budget Project and the Global Initiative for Fiscal Transparency on the video series we are making, in which I have a big role.
The day started before 6.30am and ended at around 8pm.
If that is shirking, I think my trolls should try it.

Richard, I just don’t know how you do it. I realise what a lazy sod I am compared to you.
As for the trolls….. puerile morons. I wonder whether any of them have, for example, bothered to read their way through the Taxing Wealth Report 2024?
Because of course, you produced that without any work I suppose!!??
Apparently it was all plagiarised or I had written it all before
Oddly, not a word was copied and pasted
You’re a machine Richard.
I thought I was busy back in my working days but I’m amazed by what you do.
And I’ve no idea how you find time to play Whackamole with all those trolls popping up recently. I’m glad you do though. Just watching it being done is quite cathartic.
🙂
Richard,
That is some day’s work. And as for the trolls who attempt to denigrate your work, they are clearly unaware of a maxim from the 17th century moralist and writer Francois Duc de la Rochefoucauld, which fits them like a glove:
“Commonplace minds usually condemn whatever is beyond their powers.”
In this case, clearly, the capacity for critical thinking and understanding that you amply demonstrate. But that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Best,
Lawrence
Thanks
Why give these “trolls” as you call them the oxygen of publicity? Treat them with humour. Rather like a “Baker Day” in education, tell them you’re having a “Sunak Day” via a self-administered sick note.
After all the work you have done, you have absolulety no need to justify yourself.
In fact, as I have observed previously, you should perhaps take more time off and/or reduce your output and/or concentrate you efforts in specific areas – & in short make sure you look after yourself – entirely up to you of course.
By God, that’s tired me out – better have a rest!
I rest when I am tired….
I have always been blessed with a lot of energy
