I must apologise for the poor-quality sound in a batch of videos we produced for this weekend.
We started using a new video camera last week, which I really like. The visual quality is much better. There is no doubt about that. However, so far the audio, when compared to the iPhone we had been using before, is not as good.
I have had a weekend of reading about why digital SLR camera preamps are not up to scratch, and how you work around this problem. In the short term, we will be using one of the Lavalier microphone systems that we have, which seems to work, and produces a better outcome.
In the longer term, recording the audio and video files separately might make sense. We can then merge them on editing, although all that makes for extra work. The plus side is we then have a separate audio file to publish.
I admit that these issues are things I never thought about when restarting this programme, but which I am enjoying having to learn about. Please bear with us as we learn how you do this.
On this occasion, I think it is true to say that things can only get better.

It was a long time ago when I looked but ‘broadcast quality’ ones were not that expensive compared with DSLR’s etc

I think they are too tinny
Well maybe. The opthalmologist said my high frequency hearing is below normal so that might explain it. It did seem slightly tinny when you were wearing a “fluffy” mike on your lapel.
Weird, that is the better version to me
Just goes to show what sounds or looks good to one person doesn’t necessarily mean it does to another. I am constantly enountering that when entering photos in competions. One judge loves my image and gives me 10 and another hates it and gives me 6. No accounting for taste.

I wonder whether you can use a lapel microphone that plugs directly into the video camera?
We are working on ideas – but lapel ideas also need a pre- amp
